According to the legend, impressed by the immense power and ability of Khatu Shyam, Shri Krishna gave him the boon of being worshiped in his name in Kaliyuga. During the exile, when Pandavas were wandering to save their lives, Bhima encountered Hidimba.

बाबा खाटू श्याम का संबंध महाभारत काल से माना जाता है। यह पांडुपुत्र भीम के पौत्र थे। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, खाटू श्याम की अपार शक्ति और क्षमता से प्रभावित होकर श्रीकृष्ण ने इन्हें कलियुग में अपने नाम से पूजे जाने का वरदान दिया था। वनवास के दौरान जब पांडव अपनी जान बचाते हुए भटक रहे थे, तब भीम का सामना हिडिम्बा से हुआ।
