It is said that Sati's necklace and neck had fallen here. Due to the falling of the necklace, this temple was named Maihar and due to the falling of the neck, Sharda Mata Virajin, who provides knowledge and melodious voice to the devotees. Later this temple came to be known as Maihar Mata Temple. This temple of Maa Sharda is situated on the hills of Trikut.

The mantra to please Sharda Mata of Maihar is as follows.

* 'Sharda Shardambhojavadana, Vadnambuje.

सर्वादा सर्वदास्माकम् सन्निधिम् सन्निधिम् क्रियत्.

Or Devi Sarvabhuteshu, an institution in the form of intelligence. Namastesyaye Namastesyaye Namastesyaye Namo Namah॥22

The meaning of Maihar is taken from mother's necklace. This temple is a Shaktipeeth. It is believed that when Lord Vishnu cut the dead body of Sati lying in the hands of Shiva with Sudarshan, its parts and jewelery fell at different places, which later became Shaktipeeths. This place is called Maihar because Mother's necklace fell in Maihar.

Alha and Udal were two brothers who were the generals of Chandela king Parmal. Both of them were ardent devotees of Mother Sharda. It is said that Alha performed penance for about 12 years due to which he got the darshan of Mata Sharda and was blessed with immortality.

For the welfare of the universe, Lord Vishnu divided Sati's body into 52 parts. Shaktipeeths were built wherever Sati's body parts fell. It is believed that the necklace and neck of Mata Sati had fallen here. That's why this place is called Mai's necklace i.e. Maihar.

कहते हैं कि यहां सती का हार और कंठ गिरा था. हार गिरने की वजह से इस देवस्थान का नाम मैहर पड़ा और कंठ गिरने से शारदा माता विराजीं जो भक्तों को विद्या और सुरीला कंठ प्रदान करती हैं. आगे चलकर इस मंदिर को मैहर माता मंदिर कहा जाने लगा. मां शारदा का यह मंदिर त्रिकूट की पहाड़ियों पर स्थित है.

मैहर की शारदा माता को प्रसन्न करने का मंत्र इस प्रकार है।

* 'शारदा शारदांभौजवदना, वदनाम्बुजे।

सर्वदा सर्वदास्माकमं सन्निधिमं सन्निधिमं क्रियात्।

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु बुद्धि-रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥22

मैहर का अर्थ मां का हार से लिया जाता है। यह मंदिर एक शक्तिपीठ है। मान्यता है कि जब शिव के हाथ में पड़े सती के शव को भगवान विष्णु ने सुदर्शन से काटा तो उसके हिस्से और आभूषण अलग-अलग जगहों पर गिरे, जो बाद में शक्तिपीठ बने। मैहर में माता का हार गिरने से इस जगह को मैहर कहा जाता है।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥ 3. या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना। सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा॥

आल्हा और ऊदल दो भाई थे जो चंदेल राजा परमाल के सेनापति थे। दोनों ही माता शारदा के अनन्य भक्त थे। कहा जाता है कि आल्हा ने लगभग 12 वर्ष की तपस्या की जिससे उन्हें माता शारदा के दर्शन प्राप्त हुए और अमरत्व का वरदान मिला।

ब्रह्मांड की भलाई के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने सती के शरीर को 52 भागों में विभाजित कर दिया. जहां भी सती के अंग गिरे वहां शक्तिपीठों का निर्माण हुआ. ऐसा माना जाता है यहां पर माता सती का हार और कंठ गिरा था. इसलिए इस जगह को माई का हार यानि मैहर कहा जाता है.
