Mahakal temple situated in Ujjain also has mythological importance. There is a belief about this temple that Lord Shiva had protected his devotees by killing a demon named Dushan here, after which Bhole Baba resided here after the request of the devotees. This temple is the third Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Mahakal Temple is situated in a large area near the Kshipra River. The importance of the Jyotirlinga here is also because it is the only Jyotirlinga which faces south. There are silver statues of Shri Ganesha, Shri Kartikeya and Mother Parvati in the three niches of the sanctum sanctorum.

Suffering from the atrocities of the demon, the people invoked Lord Shiva, then pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Mahakaal, tearing the earth and killing the demon. It is said that seeing the devotion and requests of the people, Lord Shiva remained seated in Ujjain forever in the form of Jyotirlinga.

महाकाल का का महामृत्युंजय मंत्र

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् |उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् || इसको बेहद प्रभावशाली माना जाता है।

उज्जैन स्थित महाकाल मंदिर का पौराणिक महत्व भी है। इस मंदिर को लेकर ऐसी मान्यता है कि भगवान शिव ने यहां दूषण नामक राक्षस का वध कर अपने भक्तों की रक्षा की थी, जिसके बाद भक्तों के निवेदन के बाद भोलेबाबा यहां विराजमान हुए थे। यह मंदिर भगवान शिव के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से तीसरा ज्योतिर्लिंग है।

गायत्री मंत्र का जाप करने से पितृ दोष, कालसर्प दोष, राहु केतु तथा शनि की पीड़ा से मुक्ति मिलती है.

महाकाल मंदिर क्षिप्रा नदी के समीप एक बडे़ क्षेत्र में स्थित है। यहां के ज्योतिर्लिंग की महत्ता इसलिये भी है कि यह एक मात्र ज्योतिर्लिंग है जो दक्षिणमुखी है। गर्भगृह के तीन आलों में श्रीगणेश, श्री कार्तिकेय एवं मां पार्वती की चांदी की प्रतिमाएं हैं।

राक्षस के अत्याचारों से पीड़ित होकर प्रजा ने भगवान शिव का आह्वान किया, तब उनकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव धरती फाड़कर महाकाल के रूप में प्रकट हुए और राक्षस का वध किया. कहते हैं प्रजा की भक्ति और उनके अनुरोध को देखते हुए भगवान शिव हमेशा के लिए ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में उज्जैन में विराजमान हो गए
