Maha Shivratri is celebrated to remember the day when Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out of the churning of the ocean. By doing this he saved the world from evil spirits, negativity, darkness and despair.
There is a religious belief that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Mother Parvati. : Mahashivratri festival has great importance in Hindu religion. Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is known as Mahashivratri. According to the calendar, this year Mahashivratri is on March 8.
All monthly and weekly festivals have importance. Worship of Bholenath is considered most important. In weekly festivals, Monday is dedicated to Bholenath. Shivratri fasting and worship is important in monthly festivals. Among the annual festivals, festivals like Maha Shivratri, Shravan month, Hartalika Teej etc. have special significance. The time of worship of Lord Shiva is Pradosh Kaal. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to worship Lord Shiva at the time of day and night. Lord Shiva is worshiped during the Pradosh period at the meeting of day and night.
Food is not consumed during fasting. Fruits are eaten both the times.
Rudrabhishek has great importance in Shiva worship. Many people perform Rudrabhishek along with all the family members on the day of Shivratri.
Lighting a lamp on Shivratri also has great importance, for Shivratri a special type of lamp is lit and Shiva is meditated sitting in front of it.
In the recitation of Lord Shiva, Shiv Purana, Shiv Panchakshar, Shiv Stuti, Shiv Ashtak, Shiv Chalisa, Shiv Rudrashtak, Shiva's shlokas and names of weapons are recited.

The pronunciation of Om Namah Shivay is also considered very important. The word Om is made up of two words, Oo and Am. Chanting Om while sitting in meditation posture provides mental peace. Shravan is the most favorite month of Lord Shiva.
महा शिवरात्रि उस दिन को याद करने के लिए मनाई जाती है जब भगवान शिव ने समुद्र मंथन से निकला जहर पीया था। ऐसा करके उन्होंने संसार को बुरी आत्माओं, नकारात्मकता, अंधकार और निराशा से बचाया।

मासिक एवम साप्ताहिक सभी त्यौहारों का महत्व होता हैं. भोलेनाथ की उपासना सबसे महत्वपूर्ण मानी जाती हैं. साप्ताहिक त्यौहारों में सोमवार भोलेनाथ को समर्पित होता हैं. मासिक त्यौहारों में शिवरात्रि का व्रत एवम पूजन का महत्व होता हैं. वार्षिक त्यौहारों में महा शिवरात्रि, श्रावण माह, हरतालिका तीज आदि त्यौहारों का विशेष महत्व होता हैं. शिव जी की पूजा का समय प्रदोष काल होता हैं. अतः शिव जी की आराधना दिन और रात्रि से संबंध के समय करना उपयुक्त माना जाता हैं. शिव जी के किसी भी उपवास की पूजा प्रदोष काल में करना उचित होता हैं.

शिव जी की पूजा प्रदोष काल में दिन और रात्रि के मिलन के समय की जाती हैं.
उपवास में अन्न ग्रहण नही किया जाता. दोनों वक्त फलाहार किया जाता हैं.
शिव पूजा में रुद्राभिषेक का बहुत अधिक महत्व होता हैं. कई लोग शिवरात्रि के दिन सभी परिवारजनों के साथ मिलकर रुद्राभिषेक करते हैं.
शिवरात्रि पर बत्ती जलाने का भी अधिक महत्व होता है, शिवरात्रि के लिए एक विशेष प्रकार की बत्ती को जलाकर उसके सम्मुख बैठ शिव ध्यान किया जाता हैं.
शिव जी के पाठ में शिव पुराण, शिव पंचाक्षर, शिव स्तुति ,शिव अष्टक, शिव चालीसा, शिव रुद्राष्टक, शिव के श्लोक, शहस्त्र नामों का पाठ किया जाता हैं.
शिव जी के ध्यान के लिए ॐ का ध्यान किया जाता हैं. ॐ के उच्चारण को बहुत अधिक महत्वपूर्ण माना गया हैं.

ॐ नमः शिवाय के उच्चारण को भी बहुत महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता हैं. ॐ शब्द ऊ एवम अम दो शब्द में मिलकर बना हैं. ध्यान मुद्रा में बैठकर ॐ के उच्चारण से मानसिक शांति मिलती हैं. मन एकाग्रचित्त होता हैं. ॐ का महत्व, हिन्दू, बौद्ध एवम जैन तीनो धर्मो में सबसे अधिक होता हैं.
शिव जी का सबसे प्रिय महिना श्रावण का होता हैं.
