दानशीलता के कारण बर्बरीक ने बिना किसी सवाल के अपना शीश भगवान श्री कृष्ण को दान दे दिया. इसी दानशीलता के कारण श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि तुम कलयुग में मेरे नाम से पूजे जाओगे, तुम्हें कलयुग में श्याम के नाम से पूजा जाएगा, तुम कलयुग का अवतार कहलाओगे और 'हारे का सहारा' बनोगे.
खाटू श्याम मंदिर की कहानी के अनुसार, द्वापरयुग में श्रीकृष्ण ने श्याम जी को वरदान दिया था कि कलयुग में उनका नाम श्याम से प्रसिद्ध होगा। इसके बाद, बर्बरीक का शीश खाटू नगर (वर्तमान राजस्थान राज्य के सीकर जिला) में स्थापित किया गया, जिससे उन्हें खाटू श्याम बाबा कहा जाता है।
मान्यताओं के अनुसार, कहा जाता है कि कलयुग के शुरुआत में राजस्थान के सीकर के खाटू गांव में बर्बरीक का शीश मिला था. कहा जात है कि ये अद्भुत घटना जब घटी जब वहां खड़ी एक गाय के थन से अपने आप दूध बहने लगा. वहीं, इसे देख वहां की जगह को खोदा गया तो यहां खाटू श्याम का सिर मिला. इसके बाद लोगों ने सोचा इस सिर का क्या किया जाए.
खाटू श्याम लक्खी मेले का आयोजन प्रतिवर्ष फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष के अष्टमी से नवमी तिथियों पर किया जाता है। इस मेले में लाखों श्रद्धालु खाटू श्याम बाबा के दर्शन के लिए आते हैं और अपने मनोकामनाओं को पूरा करने के लिए उन्हें प्रार्थना करते हैं।
राजस्थान के सीकर जिले में स्थित खाटू श्याम मंदिर लोगों की आस्था का मुख्य केंद्र बना हुआ है। मान्यताओं के अनुसार खाटू श्याम जी को भगवान कृष्ण के कलयुगी अवतार हैं। इसलिए इनकी इतनी ज्यादा मान्यता है। खाटू श्याम जी को और भी कई नामों से जाना जाता है जो उनके गुणों के आधार पर प्रसिद्ध हुए हैं।

According to the story of Khatu Shyam Temple, in Dwaparyug, Shri Krishna had given a boon to Shyam ji that in Kalyug his name would be famous as Shyam. After this, Barbarik's head was installed in Khatu Nagar (present-day Sikar district of Rajasthan state), due to which he was called Khatu Shyam Baba.
According to beliefs, it is said that at the beginning of Kalyug, the head of Barbarik was found in Khatu village of Sikar, Rajasthan. It is said that this amazing incident happened when milk started flowing from the udder of a cow standing there. Seeing this, when the place was dug, the head of Khatu Shyam was found here. After this people wondered what to do with this head.
Khatu Shyam Lakkhi fair is organized every year on Ashtami to Navami dates of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. Lakhs of devotees come to this fair to have darshan of Khatu Shyam Baba and pray to him to fulfill their wishes.
Khatu Shyam Temple located in Sikar district of Rajasthan remains the main center of faith of the people. According to beliefs, Khatu Shyam ji is the Kaliyugi incarnation of Lord Krishna. That's why they have so much recognition. Khatu Shyam ji is known by many other names which have become famous on the basis of his qualities.
