इसका अस्तित्व उस समय से है जब भगवान शिव अपनी पत्नी सती के शव को ले जा रहे थे और उनका शरीर टुकड़ों में बिखर गया था जो दुनिया भर में 52 स्थानों पर गिरा जिससे यह 'शक्तिपीठ' बन गया।

माँ जीवदानी मंदिर विरार में जीवदानी पहाड़ी पर स्थित है। यह पहाड़ पर स्थित विरार का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्थल है। यह देवी जीवदानी के अपने एकमात्र मंदिर के लिए पूरे देश में प्रसिद्ध है, जो शहर के पूर्वी हिस्से में एक पहाड़ी के ऊपर, जमीनी स्तर से लगभग 1375 सीढ़ियाँ ऊपर स्थित है।

Maa Jeevdani Temple is situated on the Jeevdani Hill in Virar. This is the most important site of Virar situated on the mountain. It is famous throughout the country for its only temple of Goddess Jeevadani, which is situated on top of a hill on the eastern side of the city, about 1375 steps above ground level.
