उज्जैन स्थित महाकाल मंदिर का पौराणिक महत्व भी है। इस मंदिर को लेकर ऐसी मान्यता है कि भगवान शिव ने यहां दूषण नामक राक्षस का वध कर अपने भक्तों की रक्षा की थी, जिसके बाद भक्तों के निवेदन के बाद भोलेबाबा यहां विराजमान हुए थे। यह मंदिर भगवान शिव के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से तीसरा ज्योतिर्लिंग है।

हे प्रभु, जगत का कल्याण कीजिये। हर घर में सुख, शांति, समृद्धि का आशीर्वाद दीजिये। जय महाकाल!
कहा जाता है महाकालेश्वर की कृपा हो जाये तो आपका बिगता हुआ काम बान जाये, आपके दुश्मन कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ सकते है, काल को भी एक बार सोचना पड़ेगा, आपके ऊपर कुदृस्ति डालने के लिए ,विश्व प्रसिद्ध बाबा महाकाल के दरबार में लाखों की संख्या में प्रतिदिन श्रद्धालु दर्शन करने आते हैं. ऐसी मान्यता है कि जो भक्त उज्जैन में महाकाल का दर्शन करने से पहले बाबा काल भैरव का दर्शन करते हैं, उनके जीवन के सारे पाप मिट जाते हैं. उनकी हर मनोकामना पूर्ण होती है.
हिन्दू धर्मशास्त्रों में भगवान महाकाल की आराधना सर्वश्रेष्ठ मानी गई है। महामारी से मुक्ति हो या किसी अन्य प्रकार की बीमारी सभी के लिए देवों के देव महाकाल के पूजन, मंत्र से हर परेशानी दूर होना संभव है।
दरअसल, महाकाल का शिवलिंग तब प्रकट हुआ था जब एक राक्षस को मारना था। भगवान शिव उस राक्षस का काल बनकर आए थे और साथ ही साथ अवंति नगरी (अब उज्जैन) के वासियों के आग्रह पर महाकाल यहीं स्थापित हो गए। ये समय यानि काल के अंत तक यहीं रहेंगे इसलिए भी इन्हें महाकाल कहा जाने लगा।
Mahakal temple situated in Ujjain also has mythological importance. There is a belief about this temple that Lord Shiva had protected his devotees by killing a demon named Dushan here, after which Bhole Baba resided here after the request of the devotees. This temple is the third Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

It is said that if you get the blessings of Mahakaleshwar, your work will be done, your enemies cannot do any harm, even Kaal will have to think once, to cast evil eye on you, lakhs of people come to the court of world famous Baba Mahakaal. Every day devotees come for darshan. It is believed that the devotees who visit Baba Kaal Bhairav before visiting Mahakal in Ujjain, all the sins of their life are erased. His every wish is fulfilled.
In Hindu theology, worship of Lord Mahakal is considered best. Be it relief from epidemic or any other kind of disease, it is possible for everyone to get rid of every problem by worshiping and chanting the mantra of Mahakal, the God of Gods.
Actually, Shivalinga of Mahakal had appeared when a demon had to be killed. Lord Shiva had come as the Kaal of that demon and at the same time, on the request of the residents of Avanti city (now Ujjain), Mahakaal was established here. They will remain here till the end of time i.e. that is why they came to be called Mahakaal.
