It is believed that no pilgrimage bears complete fruit without visiting this holy abode of Mahadev. Rameshwaram temple has 22 theerthams (sacred ponds) which contain sacred water that can remove all worldly evils from the body. Rameshwaram is known to wash away all human sins and bless the human body with eternal grace.
Rameshwaram Temple, one of the holy pilgrimage sites, is located in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The Shivalinga installed in the temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Rameshwar Tirtha is one of the Char Dham. It is believed that by seeing the Shivalinga located here, one gets relief from all diseases.7
Is it mandatory to take bath in Rameshwaram? Although it is not mandatory to take bath in these wells, following the tradition it is advisable to take bath in the 22 Tirthas or wells. Legend has it that bathing in these wells absolve a person of all his sins.

पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में से एक रामेश्वरम मंदिर तमिलनाडु के रामनाथपुरम जिले में स्थित है। मंदिर में स्थापित शिवलिंग बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। रामेश्वर तीर्थ चार धाम में से एक है। माना जाता है कि यहां स्थित शिवलिंग के दर्शन से समस्त रोगों से मुक्ति मिल जाती है।7
क्या रामेश्वरम में नहाना अनिवार्य है? हालाँकि इन कुओं में स्नान करना अनिवार्य नहीं है , लेकिन परंपरा का पालन करते हुए 22 तीर्थों या कुओं में स्नान करने की सलाह दी जाती है। किंवदंती है कि इन कुओं में स्नान करने से व्यक्ति को उसके सभी पापों से मुक्ति मिल जाती है।
पुराणों (हिंदू धर्मग्रंथों) के अनुसार, ऋषियों की सलाह पर, राम ने अपनी पत्नी सीता और अपने भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ, रावण को मारते समय हुई ब्रह्महत्या के पाप का प्रायश्चित करने के लिए यहां लिंगम (शिव का एक प्रतिष्ठित प्रतीक) स्थापित किया और उसकी पूजा की। जो एक ब्राह्मण था और विश्रवा का पुत्र था)।
शिवलिंग मानव द्वारा स्थापित किए गए हैं। इनमें से कुछ शिवलिंग मानव द्वारा निर्मित हैं तो कुछ स्वयंभू हैं और फिर उनको मंदिरों में स्थापित किया जाता है। ज्योतिर्लिंग भगवान शिव के स्वयंभू का अवतार है। ज्योतिर्लिंग का अर्थ है भगवान शिव का ज्योति के रूप में प्रकट होना।
