जन्माष्टमी की कथा अनुसार भगवान कृष्ण का जन्म भाद्रपद कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को हुआ था। भगवान कृष्ण के जन्म के समय जेल के द्वार खुद ब खुद खुल गए थे और पहरा देने वाले पहरेदार गहरी नींद में सो गए थे। दरअसल भगवान कृष्ण का जन्म कंस के कारागार में हुआ था। कंस भगवान कृष्ण की मां देवकी का भाई थे।
