पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में से एक रामेश्वरम मंदिर तमिलनाडु के रामनाथपुरम जिले में स्थित है। मंदिर में स्थापित शिवलिंग बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। रामेश्वर तीर्थ चार धाम में से एक है। माना जाता है कि यहां स्थित शिवलिंग के दर्शन से समस्त रोगों से मुक्ति मिल जाती है।
रामेश्वरम ज्योतिर्लिंग तमिलनाडु में समुद्र तट पर स्थित इस मंदिर को रामायणकालीन माना जाता है. मान्यता है कि अयोध्या के राजा भगवान श्री राम ने लंकापति रावण से युद्ध करने से पहले विजय की कामना लिए हुए इसी स्थान पर रेत का शिवलिंग बनाकर भगवान शिव की साधना की थी. जिसके बाद भगवान शिव यहां ज्योति रूप में प्रकट हुए.
तमिलनाडु के रामेश्वरम् में है रामनाथस्वामी ज्योर्तिलिंग, जिसे श्रीराम ने समुद्र के बालू की रेत से बनाया था। - कहा जाता है कि इस शिवलिंग का निर्माण उस समय हुआ था, जब श्रीराम लंका के राजा रावण से युद्ध करने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। तब भगवान शिव का आशीर्वाद पाने के लिए श्रीराम ने इस शिवलिंग का निर्माण कर उस पर जल चढ़ाया था।
रामेश्वरम कई हिंदुओं के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि वाराणसी की तीर्थयात्रा रामेश्वरम की तीर्थयात्रा के बिना अधूरी मानी जाती है। रामनाथस्वामी मंदिर के साथ यह शहर बद्रीनाथ, पुरी और द्वारका सहित सबसे पवित्र हिंदू चार धाम (चार दिव्य स्थल) स्थलों में से एक है।
क्या रामेश्वरम में स्नान करना अनिवार्य है? हालाँकि इन कुओं में स्नान करना अनिवार्य नहीं है , लेकिन परंपरा का पालन करते हुए 22 तीर्थों या कुओं में स्नान करना उचित है। किंवदंती है कि इन कुओं में स्नान करने से व्यक्ति के सभी पाप धुल जाते हैं।

Then to get the blessings of Lord Shiva, Shri Ram built this Shivling and offered water on it.

Is it compulsory to bathe in Rameswaram? Although it is not compulsory to bathe in these wells, it is advisable to bathe in the 22 tirthas or wells following the tradition. Legend has it that bathing in these wells washes away all a person's sins.
